It was the famous George Carlin who said that and he continued, "I love individuals. I hate groups of people." He was making a statement and a joke at the same time as is common for a thoughtful and classy stand-up routine. He went further with it but this is all I need for today.
I had to create a user for Facebook for boring and uninteresting reasons. As I have no connections there the algorithm suggested me all sorts of local and national politics to be enraged about. This reminded me about what steaming cesspools of hate and ignorance and stupidity these social medias are. Give man a brain and he's stupid for the rest of his miserable life, and so on and so forth.
Talk to someone face to face and you see that they are either prevented from spouting out their "true beliefs" or still remember what manners are. Chatting is lighthearted, harmless and about things both of you enjoy or some other fairly harmless topic. You can even throw a curve-ball at them by asking something serious and even if you DISAGREED about the topic you still wouldn't feel the need to insult one another.
But ask a question on the internet? It's seven days and seven nights of shitstorm that only ends if you delete your account and throw the computer to the trash bin. If the question doesn't cause an argument then someone creates it from nothing. People hate each other and their opinions but still they believe that they are entitled to one. Freedom of speech, they tell you after insulting every minority and your mother, because they are professionals in opinions.
Any community gets ruined by people. Soon there are so many opinions that the original cause gets lost and people just argue over semantics. They lay in ambush waiting for someone to tickle their trigger and boom motherfucker! you just walked into my trap, now didn't you? Every online group, eventually, turns into this.
We all boil in this hatesoup, trying to ignore it during the good days, and getting sucked in it during the bad ones. But it's always there and it's extremely unhealthy for us. We are just names and profile pictures for each other, no longer humans, just targets for hate. We hate them and they hate us right back. There's nothing to win in an argument as no one truly cares if you were smarter or meaner or whatever, they just remember how much the whole thing sucked.
We are not good people for doing this, you know?
